Globally around 80 million women and 110 million men have coronary heart disease and 1 in 6 deaths globally are caused by coronary heart disease. India alone has heart failure prevalence of 1.3 million to 4.6 million in 2022. As India continues to see a surge in the burden of cardiac disease, Left ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs), an innovative technology could change the landscape of cardiac care.
LVADs are mechanical devices which are implanted in patients with advanced heart failure to help heart pump blood more effectively. These devices seem to be a game changer and a boon for advanced heart failure cases who wait for donors.
LVADs are designed to serve as a bridge to transplantation or even offer a long-term solution known as destination therapy for those cases who are ineligible for heart transplants due to shortages in donors.
